Volume 1: Celestial Laws (Tong Shen Lun) · Chapter 4
Knowing Fate (Zhi Ming)
Attributed to Jing Tu (Song); commentary tradition by Liu Bowen (Ming)
The point of reading is to stop being deaf
The purpose of chart reading, the text says plainly, is to open people's ears — to let them perceive the direction of their own current. That requires grasping the mechanism of advance and retreat: when a chart's energy should be pushed forward, and when it should be pulled back. Knowing when to stop is treated here as the beginning of wisdom, not a consolation prize.
Classical Verse & Annotated Translation

要与人间开聋聩,顺逆之机须理会。
Note: 聋聩:喻不识气机之人。顺逆之机:五行宜进宜退之枢机。谓读命之目的在使人明进退,而非徒断吉凶。
If you would open the ears of the deaf among men, you must understand the mechanism of advance and retreat.
