When two sides stare at each other

Sometimes a chart has two strong elements that will not negotiate — fire against metal, water against fire. The classic solution is not to strengthen one side but to find the element that both can pass through, the way a bridge joins two banks. The chapter's folk image (the Weaver Girl inside the pass, the Herdsman outside) makes the point: the two are not meant to fight, they need the gate opened. In practice this is the mediator spirit — the element that transforms one side into nourishment for the other.
