Volume 1: Celestial Laws (Tong Shen Lun) · Chapter 1
The Heavenly Way (Tian Dao)
Attributed to Jing Tu (Song); commentary tradition by Liu Bowen (Ming)
Start with the sky, not the star
The book opens with a method, not a promise: before you read any chart, understand the machinery that produces it. The Three Primordial Realms — heaven, earth, and the human being between them — are one system; the stems and branches are its notation. Ask first what heaven is doing in a chart (the seasonal command, the weather of the month), and only then what a particular star means. Readings that begin with a lucky symbol and work backwards have the order inverted.
Classical Verse & Annotated Translation
Line-by-line alignment between Classical Chinese and precise English translation.
欲识三元万法宗,先观帝载与神功。
Note: 三元 = 天、地、人。帝载:天所运载之时令(节气、寒暖)。神功:其化育之力。此句为全书方法论的起点——先看「天在做什么」,再谈吉凶。
To know the root of the Three Primordial Realms and of every method built on them, first observe what heaven carries and how its work is done.
