The month is the house; the hidden stem is the facing
The month pillar sets the season and therefore the whole chart's climate — the text compares it to a house. What lives inside that house (the hidden stem in the month branch) is the spirit that actually does the work, and it faces a particular direction: which element is in charge this month. Before reading anything else, settle the house and its orientation; every later judgement is measured against them.
