Clashing Open a Vault — True or False?

Popular books hold that wealth or officer stored in one of the four vaults will never come out without a clash. Shen rejects the rule outright and then shows what a clash actually does. The vaults are earth at bottom, so a clash stirs earth; if the favourable star is already revealed in the stems it needs no clash at all, and if it is water a clash may drag the robber or the wounding officer into play and damage it. He ends by separating two different things that share the name 'clash'.
