Ba Zhai Chart: All Eight House Gua and Their Directions

A Ba Zhai chart (八宅图) is a nine-square map of your home, fixed by a single measurement: the compass bearing your front door faces. It assigns one of eight wandering stars to each sector — four supportive, four draining — and it stays the same for as long as you live there. Below is the complete reference: every house with all eight of its sectors.

What a Ba Zhai Chart Shows

The chart is a fixed overlay, not a forecast. Once the house gua is known, every one of the eight sectors holds a specific star, and the star decides what that sector wants: something high and still, or something low and moving. Nothing on the chart changes with the calendar.

• Nine sectors: the eight compass directions plus the center. Rooms are judged by which sector they fall in, not by their own shape.
• Four supportive stars: Sheng Qi (生气, life force), Tian Yi (天医, heavenly doctor), Yan Nian (延年, longevity and harmony) and Fu Wei (伏位, stability — always your door sector in this convention).
• Four draining stars: Jue Ming (绝命), Wu Gui (五鬼), Liu Sha (六煞) and Huo Hai (祸害). Traditional practice does not fight these sectors — it gives them movement, water and utility instead of rest.
• The center: no direction and no star of its own. Keep it open so the reading of the other eight sectors is not blocked by clutter.

How to Find Your House Gua

Stand inside your front door, face outward toward the street, and read a compass — phone compass is fine if it is calibrated. The bearing falls into one of eight wedges. Those wedges map to houses like this:

• 338°–359° or 0°–22° → Kan house (坎宅), north
• 23°–67° → Gen house (艮宅), northeast
• 68°–112° → Zhen house (震宅), east
• 113°–157° → Xun house (巽宅), southeast
• 158°–202° → Li house (离宅), south
• 203°–247° → Kun house (坤宅), southwest
• 248°–292° → Dui house (兑宅), west
• 293°–337° → Qian house (乾宅), northwest

Two notes before you use the tables. First, degrees close to a boundary — 22.5°, 67.5° and so on — should be measured again; a phone compass drifting three degrees can move the door into the next house. Second, this site names a house by the direction the door faces. Teachers who name it by the sitting direction rotate every chart below by 180°. Both conventions exist; the mistake is mixing them. The Full Ba Zhai Chart: Eight Houses

Each entry below lists all eight sectors in compass order. The pattern never varies by building type — an apartment, a terraced house and a farmhouse with the same door bearing produce the same chart.

Kan house (坎宅) — door faces north (338°–22°)

• North — Fu Wei (Stability): the door sector; a study or a quiet corner suits it.
• Northeast — Wu Gui (Five Ghosts): give it work to do — kitchen, utility room or storage.
• East — Tian Yi (Heavenly Doctor): the health sector; a restful bedroom or an uncluttered study.
• Southeast — Sheng Qi (Life Force): the strongest sector of this house — bedroom, desk or the room you use most.
• South — Yan Nian (Longevity and Harmony): a couple's room or the master bedroom sits naturally here.
• Southwest — Jue Ming (Severed Fate): keep it low and quiet — bathroom, laundry, storage. Never a bed.
• West — Huo Hai (Mishaps): dining or storage; not the bed, not the desk.
• Northwest — Liu Sha (Six Conflicts): a good home for the bathroom, laundry or a second entrance.

Gen house (艮宅) — door faces northeast (23°–67°)

• North — Wu Gui (Five Ghosts): a busy kitchen or utility space keeps this sector occupied.
• Northeast — Fu Wei (Stability): the door sector; a reading corner or a study.
• East — Liu Sha (Six Conflicts): bathroom, laundry or storage.
• Southeast — Jue Ming (Severed Fate): the weakest sector — keep it low, dry and quiet.
• South — Huo Hai (Mishaps): dining area or storage; avoid the bed and the desk.
• Southwest — Sheng Qi (Life Force): put the bedroom or the main desk here.
• West — Yan Nian (Longevity and Harmony): harmony and longevity — a couple's room.
• Northwest — Tian Yi (Heavenly Doctor): the health sector; restful, uncluttered, well ventilated.

Zhen house (震宅) — door faces east (68°–112°)

• North — Tian Yi (Heavenly Doctor): a restful bedroom or a quiet study.
• Northeast — Liu Sha (Six Conflicts): bathroom, laundry or a second entrance.
• East — Fu Wei (Stability): the door sector; keep the entry clear and the room calm.
• Southeast — Yan Nian (Longevity and Harmony): the master bedroom or a couple's room.
• South — Sheng Qi (Life Force): the best sector — bedroom, desk or family room.
• Southwest — Huo Hai (Mishaps): dining or storage; not the bed.
• West — Jue Ming (Severed Fate): bathroom or storage, kept low and still. No bed.

Xun house (巽宅) — door faces southeast (113°–157°)

Three Questions That Read Any Sector

1. Is it a resting room or a working room? Bedrooms and studies want the supportive stars; bathrooms, kitchens and storage are the natural occupants of the draining ones.
2. Does the star want something high or something low? Supportive sectors take height and stillness — a bed, a bookcase, a solid desk. Draining sectors take movement and water — drainage, a laundry, a busy kitchen.
3. Can you actually move it? A chart that cannot be acted on is only trivia. If the bed cannot move, change what surrounds it, or change which room the bedroom is.

Ba Zhai Chart FAQ

Is a Ba Zhai chart the same as a Kua number chart? No. A Ba Zhai chart describes the building: it is fixed by the door's bearing and applies to everyone living there. A Kua number describes a person and needs birth year and gender. Confusing the two is the most common mix-up in English-language feng shui writing.

Which direction do I measure — the front door or the building entrance? The front door of your own unit. In a block of flats, the shared lobby facing is not your house measurement.

My chart says the bed should move, but the room is small. What then? Prioritise in this order: where the bed head points and what sits beside it, then which room is used for sleeping, then furniture placement inside the sector. Small rooms rarely fail a chart completely — they just limit how much of it you can use.

How often does the chart change? It does not, unless the door bearing changes — renovating an entrance can genuinely reset a house chart. Annual visits from the flying stars are a different method layered on top.

Feng shui is a traditional design framework rather than a prediction system. Use the chart to decide what goes where, and treat everything else as interpretation.
