Eight Mansions Feng Shui Calculator: Find Your House Gua

An Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) calculator converts a single measurement — the compass bearing your front door faces — into a nine-sector map of your home, four sectors supportive and four draining. It is arithmetic, not intuition: the same bearing always produces the same chart, which is why you can check any calculator by hand.

What an Eight Mansions Calculator Actually Computes

Three steps, in order. It normalizes your bearing to the nearest of eight compass sectors; it names the house gua from that sector; then it distributes the eight wandering stars across the nine-grid using the Da You Nian sequence, the classic Eight Mansions flight order. Everything else you see on a result page — which sector suits a bed, where water belongs — is interpretation layered on top of those three steps.

• Bearing to sector: each 45° wedge maps to N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W or NW, with boundaries rounding clockwise.
• Sector to house gua: in the Mingsage convention the door-facing sector names the house, so the door sector is always Fu Wei (Stability).
• Stars to the nine-grid: four supportive stars — Sheng Qi, Tian Yi, Yan Nian, Fu Wei — and four draining ones — Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha, Huo Hai — land in fixed positions.

Facing Degrees to House Gua: The Whole Lookup

This is the entire conversion, generated from the same constants the free tool uses. If your bearing falls inside a range, that range is your house:

• 338°–359° or 0°–22° → North — Kan house (坎宅)
• 23°–67° → Northeast — Gen house (艮宅)
• 68°–112° → East — Zhen house (震宅)
• 113°–157° → Southeast — Xun house (巽宅)
• 158°–202° → South — Li house (离宅)
• 203°–247° → Southwest — Kun house (坤宅)
• 248°–292° → West — Dui house (兑宅)
• 293°–337° → Northwest — Qian house (乾宅)

House naming is a school question, and this is where most contradictory readings are born. Mingsage names the house by the direction the door faces, so the door sector holds Fu Wei and the chart is read outward from your entrance. Teachers who name a house by its sitting direction — the opposite bearing — rotate every chart by 180°. Both systems exist. Pick one and stay inside it.

The Three Inputs Every Calculator Needs

1. A floor plan — a builder's drawing, a listing photo or a rough sketch. Shape matters more than scale.
2. A grid alignment — the nine sectors are drawn over the outer walls, not over individual rooms. In an L-shaped flat, the grid still spans the full footprint.
3. A door bearing — taken standing inside the entrance, facing outward, phone flat.

Of the three, the bearing is the one people get wrong. A reading taken from a corridor map, a leasing agent's description, or from memory is not a measurement.

Worked Example: A Door Facing 210°

210° sits inside the southwest wedge, so the house is a Kun house (坤宅). Its chart, straight from the engine that also powers the free tool, runs like this:

• North — Jue Ming (Severed Fate, worst): keep it low and quiet; storage or a bathroom, never a bed.
• Northeast — Sheng Qi (Life Force, most auspicious): the strongest sector for a bedroom, a desk or the room you use most.
• East — Huo Hai (Mishaps, draining): fine for a dining area or storage; not for the bed or the desk.
• Southeast — Wu Gui (Five Ghosts, draining): suits a busy kitchen or an active utility space.
• South — Liu Sha (Six Conflicts, draining): a good home for the bathroom, laundry or a second entrance.
• Southwest — Fu Wei (Stability, neutral): the door sector itself; a study or a quiet corner sits well here.
• West — Tian Yi (Heavenly Doctor, auspicious): the health sector — a restful bedroom or a calm study.
• Northwest — Yan Nian (Longevity and Harmony, auspicious): harmony and longevity; a couple's room or the master bedroom.

Read that list as three good sectors, one stable sector and four sectors that would rather hold movement than rest. A bedroom in the northeast, a bathroom in the south: that is the whole method applied once.

What a Calculator Cannot Do

• It does not compute your personal Kua number. That needs birth year and gender plus a year-boundary rule — Start of Spring or Lunar New Year — and schools disagree on which applies. Until that convention is fixed, a number would be a guess dressed as data.
• It does not add the year's flying stars. Eight Mansions is the fixed layer: the house does not change when the calendar does. Annual overlays are a separate method and are best applied after the fixed layer is settled.
• It cannot measure your home for you. Garbage in, gospel out: the chart is only as good as the bearing you supply.
• It does not need cures, mirrors or talismans. Classical Eight Mansions moves function and position — what sits where — not objects you buy.

Eight Mansions Calculator FAQ

Is an Eight Mansions calculator accurate? The arithmetic is: the chart is a deterministic function of one bearing. Accuracy therefore depends on two things you control — how carefully you measure the door, and whether the boundary convention you use matches the one the calculator uses.

Do I need a real compass? A phone compass is enough if you calibrate it and stand still. Readings within about three degrees of a boundary — 22.5°, 67.5° and so on — should be taken again, because a few degrees can move the door into the next house.

Does it work for apartments and high-rises? Yes. Use the door you actually walk through, not the building's main entrance or the lobby facing. The chart applies to your unit's footprint.

Is “8 mansions” the same as “eight mansions”? Yes — the numeral and the spelled-out form name the same method, alongside its Chinese name Ba Zhai (八宅). Search engines treat them as near-equivalents, and so should you.

Feng shui is a traditional design framework. Treat a chart as a way to organize rooms and priorities, not as a prediction about your life.
