10-Year Luck Cycle (Da Yun) in BaZi: How Yours Is Calculated and Read

A BaZi chart does not change. The eight characters you were born with are the same eight characters for life. What changes is which part of that chart is switched on — and in BaZi, the switch is the 10-year luck cycle.

In Chinese it is 大运 (Da Yun), literally "great luck" or "big movement." It is the most commonly asked-about part of a reading, and the one most often guessed at. So here is the actual method.

What a 10-year luck cycle is

After your four pillars, a BaZi chart continues with a sequence of further pillars — each one governing roughly ten years of your life. They are not random and they are not chosen. They are the continuation of one specific pillar already in your chart: the month pillar.

Think of the birth chart as the instrument and the luck cycles as the piece being played on it. A chart with strong Fire does not express that Fire continuously; the luck cycles decide when Fire is amplified and when it is damped.

How Da Yun is calculated

Three things determine your cycle sequence: the month pillar, your gender, and the polarity of your birth year's stem.

1. Start from the month pillar. Your first luck pillar is the next (or previous) stem-and-branch pair in the sexagenary cycle.
2. Decide the direction. A yang year stem with a male chart runs forward; a yin year stem with a male chart runs backward. For female charts the rule inverts: yin year forward, yang year backward.
3. Decide the starting age. Count the days from your birth to the adjacent solar term — the next one if you run forward, the previous one if you run backward — then convert: three days to one year, one day to four months.
4. Continue the sequence. Each following pillar advances one step in the cycle and governs about ten years.

Because steps two and three need an exact birth time and a solar-term calendar, this is where a BaZi calculator earns its keep: the sequence, the direction and the starting age are all mechanical once the chart is correct.

Luck cycle, year, month: three different clocks

These three get mixed up constantly. They answer different questions.

The practical reading order is luck cycle first, year second, month last. A big year inside a quiet cycle tends to stay quiet; a quiet year inside a strong cycle still matters.

How to read the cycle you are in

• Name the element — what stem and branch govern these ten years, and what does that element do to the rest of your chart? Does it support your Day Master, drain it, or clash with a pillar?
• Find what it lands on — each luck pillar interacts with a specific pillar of your birth chart. Which one it activates is usually the clearest signal.
• Split the decade — many readers treat the first five years as weighted towards the stem and the second five towards the branch. Schools differ on how strongly to apply this, so treat it as emphasis, not a hard split.
• Look for repetition — if a theme keeps appearing across the luck cycle, the annual pillars and your birth chart at once, that is what the decade is about.

What a luck cycle does not do

It does not schedule events. A "wealth cycle" is not a payday, and a "clash cycle" is not a warning. What the cycle describes is which parts of your chart are amplified — and amplified tendencies still get expressed through your choices.

It also is not a substitute for the whole chart. Two people can share a luck cycle and live it completely differently, because the birth chart underneath is different. Read the cycle against the chart, never on its own.
