BaZi Birth Time Rectification: What Changes When the Hour Was Never Recorded
The usual failure is not a wrong date. It is a default hour filled in to make the chart look complete. This page is about the other path: a three-pillar chart that states what the record supports and marks the fourth pillar as open.
Why the birth hour decides the fourth pillar
The hour pillar is the fourth column of a BaZi chart, and it is the only one that needs a clock time. The year, month and day pillars come from the calendar date and the birth city; the hour pillar comes from where true solar time at birth falls inside the twelve double-hours.

A missing birth hour is not a broken chart: it becomes a three-pillar chart
When the hour is not on the record, our engine drops the hour pillar instead of filling one in. The chart is then built from three pillars, and anything that needed the fourth is labelled open rather than invented. The example below comes from the same engine and the same true solar time correction chain as the paid readings.
A real three-pillar example
Born 15 June 1990 in Shanghai, China. The birth hour was never recorded.
Day Master: Yin Metal (辛), element Metal. A three-pillar chart still names it, and it is the Day Master a four-pillar chart would name.
The hour column stays open. Nothing is written into it: a chart with a guessed hour reads as confidently as a chart with a recorded one, and that confidence would be borrowed rather than earned.

How we express uncertainty: the confidence ladder
A reading is only useful if it is clear about how much the chart can carry. We use three levels, and we name the level instead of calling a whole reading accurate or inaccurate.
Level 1 · The hour is on the record
The clock time is known, so all four pillars are stated. The one soft edge is a birth within a few minutes of a boundary: the equation of time is an approximation, and near a boundary that approximation is what decides the pillar.
Level 2 · The hour is bracketed
Event-based rectification can narrow the hour to a leading candidate while one or two alternatives still fit. When that happens, a statement that depends on the hour belongs to a named candidate hour rather than to the chart as a whole.
Level 3 · The hour is open
No usable hour is available, so the chart keeps three pillars. Everything in the still-stated list above is read normally; everything in the held-open list stays out of the conclusions.
We do not print a confidence percentage. A number would suggest a precision the chart cannot carry. Naming which claims are supported and which are held open says the same thing without inflating it.
Narrowing the hour afterwards: the eight-question rectification

Why not use 12:00 as a default hour?

How precise is the rectified hour?
It is a narrowing, not a measurement. It weighs the double-hours against the reported events and patterns, and more than one hour can remain plausible. That is why the result is named as a confidence level rather than dressed up as a time.
Does the birth city still matter without a birth hour?
